anatomy in motion
Anatomy In Motion (AiM) founded by renowned movement specialist Gary Ward, is an approach that emphasises the interconnectedness of the entire body, offering a holistic view of movement and function.
“Anatomy in Motion helps you understand and overcome your movement limitations. By addressing the root causes of your physical and postural adaptations, you can realign, rebalance, and unlock your full movement potential. We call it Finding Centre—the midpoint of all movement, where calm and maximum potential coexist. We get the body to do the healing – through Movement.” - Gary Ward
It takes into account how upper body biomechanics can be influenced greatly by lower body biomechanics & vice versa. It is possible to understand anatomical relationships ALL throughout the body - e.g. between the toes & neck, foot & spine, wrist & pelvis and so on.
AiM sets out to determine exactly what movements you are missing or struggling to access. Therefore, this gives you a clear direction of how to go about restoring optimal movement in your body.
Regardless of your symptoms, corrective movements will be used to re-educate your body in it’s movements (not your typical stretch it, strengthen it approach). This allows your body to reorganise itself.
We get the body to do the healing through movement. This ‘system reset’ ultimately takes stress away from the painful area and distributes load more efficiently through the whole system.
See video below of BBC’s Doctor in The House which highlights AiM in action with Gary Ward - incredible watch!
Flow Motion Model
By observing the body in three dimensions as it moves through the walking gait cycle, Gary identified optimal movement patterns that we can use to overcome any postural limitations. These movement patterns form a ‘map’ of the moving human body - Flow Motion Model - which highlights how ALL bones and joints are inherently connected and work together.
The Flow Motion Model is description of the journey of every single bone and joint in the human body through a single footstep. A journey of only 0.6 – 0.8 seconds in which EVERY single joint undertakes every single possible joint motion in all three dimensions of movement in order to have efficient and effortless movement.
It is essentially a map to help navigate the struggles within the body and see things MUCH more clearly when it comes to the challenge of working with the Human Body in motion - unearthing problems in the system that often get overlooked or ignored.
AiM and the Flow Motion Model are central to my work with the human body in motion and have exponentially improved my understanding and successes with helping people get out of pain.
